What should I mention in my application to a writing gig?

I'm looking to pull down a job writing press releases for a company.
I have no writing experience, I've taken a Comp 1010 class and aced it. That's all. My odds of getting this job are uncomfortably similiar to my odds of surviving a nuclear holocaust. Regardless of the aforementioned;
What should I include in my application? Should I write an essay? How should I word the app? Since all my previous work experience is in manual labor, should I even include any references?

A REAL writer is someone who HAS to write and this includes writing for the school or college paper and the local papers. If you have ANY articles or press releases published in any of the above named items, then please include details of them in your cover letter, and include clippings (copies of them) from the newspaper.

If you have written anything for an online newsletter, then include the URL for that (if its still online). If you have a blog that you write for or contribute to, and its not too personal, then include the URL for that as well.

Did any of your articles from the Comp class get published? Any of them? No? Well, you might be struggling.

Include one or two references at least to attest to your attendance and punctuality.
