Benefits of Press Releases for Small Sites?
I have a small site that I just started; is there any benefits for me to create/write press releases?
Regardless of the size of your site, a press release will definitely help w/ traffic, exposure, and even SEO. Here are a few reasons why you use them:
Backlinks - A properly optimized press release will include your top keywords as well as links to your website. Once the press release is distributed, it can get picked up by a wide range of news search engines, related web sites and channels including major search engines such as Google and Yahoo! Each time your press release gets picked up, it is reproduced on that site along with all of your keywords and links. This generates a good amount of quality backlinks to your site that will increase the page rank and link popularity of your website (especially when the backlinks are from news sites with high page ranks of their own).
More Visibility - When your press release is distributed, it will be linked very quickly (news stories are more time sensitive), giving you early visibility on news sites, news searches and standard search engines. Many news web sites also archive stories which can help to deliver long term link value, rankings and visibility.
Increased Traffic to Your Website - The more information you show that you know, the more trustworthy you become; well written content will always add credibility to your website. When your press releases start appearing in Google news and Yahoo! news for your keywords, potential customers searching for your product or business will see that you are a credible source of information in your industry and that you can be trusted.

Depending on where you send it, but the benefits are:
1. If you sent to your local media, your local newspaper or TV station can pick it up IF you've got an interesting or newsworthy story to tell
2. If you send it through online distribution services, the benefits are:
- if your news gets into Google News, for example, other sites will run your press release so you can reach a wider audiences (websites and blogs search for related news from sources such as Google or Yahoo News and run the RSS feeds)
- more backlinks: as more sites run your press release, you can hopefully have more backlinks to your site and more backlinks mean better search engine rankings
Of course, the goal is to get an editor to be interested in your release and hopefully feature your business more (write up an article, interview you, mention you in a piece they're doing)

Press releases are the most effective form of marketing in terms of ROI, especially for small businesses. A press release satisfies the constant demand for newsworthy content by local and national media outlets with information on YOUR company, or one of its products or events.
Press releases are specifically tailored to grab the attention of journalists and media outlets with the capacity to disseminate your company's name and information to targeted audiences.
Press releases also add credibility to your company, not only in terms of branding, but by building backlinks to your site from authoritative news Web sites and other channels.
Good luck with your site's marketing efforts!
